As stunning as the new Olmsted National Bank in Rochester, Minn., may appear on the outside, its most impressive feature may be one the general public will never see. The buildings designers, Kane and Johnson Architects of Rochester, called for 34,000 square feet of hollowcore plank from County Materials for the project. This includes four stories and a penthouse that houses mechanical equipment and could double as a recreational room. One of the big things was being able to keep the depth of the floors fairly thin, said Kane and Johnson Project Manager Jasen Andring. Thats one of hollowcores really big advantages. That, and it goes up quickly. County Materials hollowcore probably saved us & 75 percent or better on time vs. pour-in-place. The bulk of the hollowcore was used on the lower floors, where 30,000 square feet of the 8-inch depth served as the floor system. About 4,000 square feet of 12-inch plank served as the flooring for the penthouse. And while the building provides an amazing view of the city, designers might look inside for a beautiful sight. Using hollowcore, Andring said, you can avoid a lot of extra steel columns and beams.
